Do the Flippy Ear (2/28/15)

Emily is a social, cultural, and political innovator. She is also creating a stir on the dance floor with her latest invention: The Flippy Ear. When the beat is bumping and the club is thumping all you have to do is stick your ears out and flip. Any music can accompany "The Flippy Ear" but it is best served with a healthy side of bass, and a heaping portion of funk. If you throw in a tall glass of groove and sprinkle on a dash of backbeat then you've got a real good time on your hands.

Ladies and gentlemen, The Flippy Ear:

Fast Friday 2: Once More with Speeding (2/27/15)

Like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Emily is capable of superhuman speeds. Here she stakes a solid claim to her domain. Engaging in what she calls "Conquering the Ottoman Empire" (aka sitting on/rubbing all over/lying on the floral Ottoman) Emily is in full-on speed demon mode. First she is sitting sedately, then something catches her attention. No one knows what sort of things she sees when she looks around like this -- ghost angels, unicorn flies, crab cakes, the spirit of Lil' Sebastan, alternate dimensions, blue and black/white and gold dresses -- but Emily, ever vigilant quickly springs into action knowing she must defend her territory from even perceived threats. She quickly marks the Ottoman and throws herself over it covering as much of the space as possible so the phantom intruder cannot claim it. She finally rests, knowing she was successful in her mission. The Ottoman is hers. History is written by the victor, and she knows that today she is the one to tell the tale of this event.

Sneak Attack!!! (2/26/15)

When facing one of her adversaries, Emily employs a wide range of tactics to gain the upper hand. None is more effect than the "Sneak Attack!!!" First, she picks her spot carefully, far from watchful eyes. Then, in perfect still ness and silence, she waits patiently for her prey to emerge. Once she has her eyes on it she steadies preparing for her initial strike. She tenses mer muscles, lifts her body ready to spring and then...

BLAMO!!! She is upon her unsuspecting opponent with "the fury of a thousand knives" (which is what she calls her front paws). After the initial strike is accomplished, she further eviscerates her victim with the rest of her martial skills. Being a paragon of feline beauty, she does all of this with a fluidity and grace of movement befitting her stately nature. As always, the "Sneak Attack!!!" is a movement best appreciated in slow motion. Special thanks to The Rainbow Snake for appearing again in this blog.*

*You wouldn't believe how hard it is to get an armless serpent to sign a release form. "Oooooh, I have no hands, how am I going to hold the pen." "Ooooh, I don't know if this post portrays me in the most flattering light." "Oooooh, if I'm going to sign this you have to refer to me at all times as her arch nemesis, not just her nemesis." and on and on. How The Rainbow Snake can gab. No wonder Emily has chosen it as her arch nemesis.

My Opalescent Tree-Shark (2/25/15)

Last night, America bid farewell to Parks and Recreation, perhaps the most perfect television program to ever exist. In the town of Pawnee, Indiana dedicated individuals fought in their own ways (and as a team) for a better world: lovable goofballs, staunch libertarians, fantasy game designers, Satan's niece, the first man to live to 150, Genuine's cousin, the first female President (don't care, it happened, I'm sure of it), and the most beautiful nurse in North America, all working to create a brighter future.

Ann Perkins was called many things in the course of the 120+ episodes of Parks and Recreation: a beautiful rule-breaking moth, a poetic and noble land-mermaid, a cunning pliable chestnut-haired sunfish, and last night, in a fitting apotheosis she was described in a manner fully befitting her radiant perfection. Leslie Knope in one of her many triumphs termed Ann Perkins an, "opalescent tree-shark." I don't know what that means exactly, but it conjures an image of such power and beauty that I am inspired to show the only other animal fitting of such high praise: Emily Dickinson. She is my opalescent tree-shark. Here she is in all of her glory:

Claws and Effect (2/24/15)

Lions sleep, on average 18-20 hours a day. Many other big cats do the same. Emily, expressing her deep kinship with her wild cousins, is no different. However, during her few hours of activity, there is rarely a dull moment. She is often sharpening her mind and her body for whatever physical and mental challenges may come her way. Here she is "working out," practicing her deadly claw moves and strengthening her arms for prey-grasping. Yes, even when it appears that she is just scratching a piece of cardboard, it turns out that Emily is tapping into the essential matter of the universe, communing with the primeval elements that course through her genetic code connecting her to her ancient feline ancestors. A feat such as that deserves to be caught in slow motion.

The Yawn of Disapproval (2/23/15)

We have already met the #SideYawn, and there are many more yawns in Emily's repertoire. The one that fits today is the Yawn of Disapproval. For everything from John Travolta getting unexpectedly handsy with Scarlett Johansson to John Travolta's new face, to, well, anything else you can think of that has to do with John Travolta recently, this is a yawn for any occasion where disapproval of the highest order is called for. When she was roused from her slumbers this morning, Emily broke out this rarely seen, but stingingly effective, yawn-based maneuver.

First she makes you think that she is so disinterested in the event that has offended her feline sensibilities that she is just licking her lips. Then she quietly pivots, building on this solid foundation of disdain, a towering pillar of yawn, displaying all of her glory. This technique, almost impossible to accomplish, effectively juxtaposing her glamorous canines with the unspeakably gauche act she has just witnessed/experienced. Yes, this yawn is a masterpiece.

Special Forces Roll (2/22/15)

Emily is a cat of many talents. It took almost her entire life, but, at long last, an adversary has come along to test all of those talents. That adversary, is The Rainbow Snake. Here, in slow motion, Emily demonstrates a surefire defense that is proven to repel The Rainbow Snake's most vicious and cunning assaults: The Special Forces Roll. Captured here in slow motion so that it is possible for the human eye to see, The Special Forces Roll is on display in all its glory. First she distracts TRS with a half dive, when TRS gets too ambitious, she unleashes her hand-talons (aka claws) and gets a hold. From her now superior position, she can let her mouth-razors (aka teeth) do the rest of the work. The Rainbow Snake never stood a chance.

Cat in the Box (2/21/15)

Happy Caturday! Emily is a cat of the world, but sometimes the weekend provides the perfect opportunity to luxuriate for a bit and reconnect with life at home. When not galavanting across the globe, Emily can often be found in one of her favorite boxes. Here she is defending her box from her arch nemesis (who will show up many more times here on MySlowMoCat) The Rainbow Snake.

Catliness is Next to Godliness (2/19/15)

Emily prepares for another day at the office. As usual she ends up looking immaculate ready for whatever might come her way. As scripture (the Holy Book of Bastet) tells us: "Catliness is next to Godliness, unless it's in slow mo, in which case it is, in fact, greater."

#SideYawn (2/18/15)

In the world of profile portraiture, nothing compares to the side yawn. Majestic Emily dials it up a notch for this enthralling, thrill-a-minute roller coaster ride of a yawn. #SideYawn

The Yawn/Welcome to My Slow Mo Cat (2/14/15)

My Slow Mo Cat is exactly what it sounds like. Every day (well, almost every day) you will be treated to a slow motion video of a cat. To get things started, here is the star of MySlowMoCat, the SlowMoCat herself, Ms. Emily Dickinson. Born on a Japanese war ship in 1999 and named for a poetic legend, the Ageless Emily (as she is known in the Orient) has traveled far and wide. A direct descendent of the Egyptian Cat-Goddess Bastet herself, it is hard to say what Emily is best known for: her scientific innovations, her refined palate, her skill with a sword, or her facility with the written word. You will be seeing a lot of Emily in the days, weeks, and indeed months to come. Stay tuned for more Slow. Mo. Cats!!!
